Guwahati: The government has to focus more on development of rural areas for eradicating poverty and unemployment, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has said.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony of a hostel and guest house for women at Kahikuchi near Guwahati yesterday, Gogoi said another way to eradicate poverty is to provide opportunity to youngsters from rural areas.

"Earlier youngsters from rural areas were unable to secure benefits extended for employment and related issues. In recent years our government has taken a number of programmes for creating avenues for jobs and also self-employment among the segment," he said.

The Chief Minister said measures have been initiated for strengthening the panchayati raj system in Assam for development of rural areas.

"In the field of women empowerment, those who have been associated with self-help groups have already brought a vibrant change in the state's economy. The government is working to enhance skill development for women," he said.

Gogoi added that new courses have to be taken up so that women and youths are trained in skills which have relevance in a modern market driven economy.

During the event, financial help totalling over Rs four crore were extended to around 1,000 families under the Chief Minister's Jeevan Jyoti Self-Employment scheme and Special Employment Programme.
