Bhubaneswar: The social media was recently abuzz with news regarding withdrawal of old banknotes in the denominations of Rs 100, 10 and 5. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was quick to issue a statement and termed such news as ‘incorrect.’
Now a message post (e-mail) is doing rounds on several social media platforms about winning Rs 1.6 crore as COVID-19 compensation from the United Nation (UN).
The post highlights that "Your e-mail address was listed among the RBI promotional on COVID-19 2021 programme and has won Rs 1 Crore 60 lac from the United Nations as COVID-19 compensation.”
The post further seeks several personal information including name, mobile number, address , e-mail and even bank account details.
A fact check conducted by the PIB found that no such e-mail has been sent by RBI and termed the post as ‘FAKE.’
In a tweet, PIB Fact Check wrote, “An email allegedly from RBI claims that the recipient has won Rs 1.60 cr from UN as #COVID19 compensation and is asking for personal & bank details to claim the prize. This email is #Fake. RBI never contacts the public asking for any type of personal information.”
Earlier, the Reserve Bank of India in tweet had also responded to the media reports regarding withdrawal of certain banknotes.
