Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the country's longest rail-cum-road bridge, the Bogibeel Bridge in Assam today, on the birth anniversary of late prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee which is observed as the 'Good Governance Day' by the Centre.
The PM will also flag off the first passenger train passing through this Bridge over Brahmaputra river connecting Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
Vehicles and trains will start plying on the double decker Bogibeel bridge. This bridge on Brahmaputra river marks a historical milestone towards achieving the goal of New India.
According to Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) officials, Modi is likely to arrive at Dibrugarh on a special flight from Delhi while the inauguration is said to take place at around 1.30 PM.
The Bogibeel bridge connects the south bank of the Brahmaputra river in Assam's Dibrugarh district with Silapathar in Dhemaji district, bordering Arunachal Pradesh.
The bridge and the train will be a boon for the people of Dhemaji as major hospitals, medical colleges and airport are in Dibrugarh, the third-largest city in the Northeast. It will also help the people of Itanagar as it is just over 15 km from Naharlagun.
With a length of 4.94 km, and with double line broad gauge tracks and a three-lane road, Bogibeel is the fourth bridge over the Brahmaputra.
