Muzaffarnagar: The Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd (UPPCL) has initiated steps for recovery of dues worth about Rs 20 crore pending with 12 steel factories, a senior official said today.

Executive Engineer Gopal Singh said he has sought permission from senior officials to realise the outstanding amount or disconnect power supply to the factories, including those of BSP leaders Kadir Rana and Shahnawaz Rana.

The case relates to alleged power theft that came to light in 2010 after which an assessment of Rs 80 crore had been issued by the department. Some amount had been furnished by the factories` owners on the direction of a special court. Steps for the recovery were initiated when it dismissed their appeals on March 16.

An engineer has already been arrested and 17 other engineers placed under suspension in this regard.
