After Atul Subhash, a 34-year-old Bengaluru-based techie, died by suicide, another young man reportedly killed himself in Muzaffarnagar district, Uttar Pradesh, due to alleged torture by his wife and in-laws.
The man identified as Rahul made a video and consumed poison. Rahul said his wife Jyoti and in-laws were trying to trap him in a false case.
“They are asking for 12 lakh rupees. Where should I get the money from? I don't want to die, but I am dying because I don't see any way out. The wife is saying I will ruin you, I will make your life hell. Today is my last day. I don't want to live,” Rahul can be heard saying in the video.
The video has once again sparked a debate on the mental harassment of men and fake cases lodged by wives and their families.
Serious Concern:
The repeated rise in the death of men has become a rallying point for India’s nascent men’s rights movement. Groups like the Save Indian Family Foundation reported surging membership, while activists Deepika Bhardwaj and Mitra Guha Pal have called for equal rights for men. The suicide cases have fueled demands for legal reforms to address false allegations and alimony disputes.
Legal Implications and Misuse of Laws:
The cases have also reignited debates about the misuse of Section 498A (anti-dowry law). Lawyer Abha Singh cited nine 'false' FIRs against Atul Subhash, including murder and domestic violence charges that were later disproven. She called for action against the Uttar Pradesh police, who allegedly fabricated cases, stating such misuse 'denies justice to genuine victims.'
