Raipur: President Pratibha Patil on Saturday asked corporators and representatives of Chhattisgarh government to build an exclusive institution for tribal children in the state to cater to their education needs.

The institution should help provide education to tribal groups, who are in a majority in the state, she said while inaugurating a state-of-the-art building of the city`s municipal corporation here.

Patil, who is on a two-day visit to the state, said it is a sad fact that on the one hand large buildings are being built in big cities and on the other hand, a large number of slums are coming up which do not have access to basic facilities.

"It is the responsibility of a developed community to ensure housing, health and education for them (slums)," she said.

She also said that town planning should be done in such a way that basic amenities like water, electricity, cleanliness, education, waste disposal and transport are managed and provided for adequately.

"It is usually seen that "we develop large urban living projects and then look for solutions to put in place civic amenities. This should be changed," she said.

Chhattisgarh Governor Shekhar Dutt and Chief Minister Raman Singh along with a number of MLAs were also present during the event.
