Baripada: Police on Wednesday arrested a married man on charge killing a tribal college girl whose body was found underneath a culvert in Bangirposhi area on Sunday.

The man was identified as Manoranjan Patra [27] of village Monda under Suliapada police station. Patra is married and has a two-year-old daughter.

Patra was nabbed by the police after verification of the mobile call record of the victim girl. The accused was taken to the site this morning where the murder took place. He confessed to having committed the murder, Bangriposhi police station Inspector-in-Charge Dillip Sahu told reporters.

According to police, Patra had an intimate relationship with the victim girl some months ago. They used to meet each other and even had physical relationship, police said adding that on Friday Patra took the girl to the site of the incident in his bike.

They then had an heated argument as the girl demanded that Patra should marry her. Patra, however, suggested to the girl to flee to Kerala where he was working. As the girl insisted on marriage, Patra allegedly strangulated her and hidden her body underneath the culvert, the police said.

Later, the police said, Patra escaped after throwing her dead body under a culvert.

A case of murder is registered at Bangriposhi police station under section 302, 201 of IPC.

The deceased girl was a student of Sreema Womens College Baripada.
