Ranchi: Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda, who was beaten up inside the high-security Birsa Munda Central Jail, has lodged a complaint with the police accusing jail authorities of the assault.

Koda`s MLA wife Gita handed over his complaint letter to the Sadar police station around 10.30 pm on Monday night, an official in the Sadar police station told PTI over phone. He said the complaint had charged the jail authorities and not mentioned the name of any individual.

"We will consult with our higher officials on the matter before converting the complaint into FIR," he said when asked whether an FIR had already been filed. Geeta Koda alleged before the media that the Ranchi district administration had tried to hush it up by "not providing accurate information about the incident".

Koda, who is in judicial custody in connection with a multi-crore scam, had his hand fractured after he was allegedly beaten up by inmates of the jail. Ranchi Deputy Commissioner K K Soan had said on Monday that the 40-year-old lawmaker was "beaten up by a couple of prisoners of upper division ward who insisted that he take meal with other inmates".

"He was admitted to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences with injury in his hand," Soan had said. Koda, however, had said that he had been assaulted by jail guards. "We were sitting on a dharna peacefully demanding quality food when jail guards attacked us with lathis.

"They were beating me as if they wanted to eliminate me. It`s a political conspiracy and I demand a judicial probe into the whole incident," Koda had said. IG (Prison) Vijay Kumar has denied Koda`s allegations.

Koda, who represents Chaibasa constituency in Parliament, said he would report the incident to Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar. Koda, who was chief minister from September 2006 to August 2008, was arrested on November 30, 2009 in connection with the multi-crore scam.
