Kochi: Noted writer Arundhathi Roy on Friday said the judiciary needed to be ` overhauled` in order to ensure justice to ordinary people.

`The judicial system has to be overhauled in a serious way to ensure justice to ordinary people," she told reporters here.

Referring to the 2G spectrum scam and the Radia tapes, she said money could buy anything in this country. "All institutions of democracy have hollowed out."

Feminist politics had become an NGO activity, she said adding `sexual abuse alone is considered as women`s issue by people involved with women`s rights`. But there were 90,000 Maoist women in Chattisgarh "who can be wiped out" any moment.

Here the women were actively linked to issues of politics and displacement and that too was a women`s issue, she said.

The Maoists were "trying to protect their rights" and their "retaliation" was termed as terrorism, Roy said.

Roy said most of the successful writers had nothing to do with "the terrible reality of our time" and all they "want is to win prizes, make money and become famous. They move from festival to festival."

For her, a writer`s duty was to record injustice and think of more ways of addressing it.
