New Delhi: The Delhi Police on Monday filed an FIR in connection with the attack on students by a mob at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi.
"We have filed one FIR," Delhi Police spokesperson M.S. Randhawa told IANS.
Several masked individuals thrashed students and teachers inside the campus here with wooden and metal rods on Sunday.
While the number of the injured in the various clashes which occurred throughout Sunday was not yet known, at least 20 students were admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) with severe injuries, including the Students Union President Aishe Ghosh, who was reportedly hit over the eye with an iron rod.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday talked to Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and requested him to call representatives from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) for discussions, officials said.
The telephonic conversation between the home minister and the LG came a day after masked men indulged in violence on the JNU campus.
"The home minister spoke to the LG and requested him to initiate discussions with representatives from the JNU," an official said.
Yesterday, the home minister had spoken to Delhi Police chief Amulya Patnaik and ordered an inquiry into the incident.
The Home Ministry has sought a report from the Delhi Police.
Violence broke out in JNU on Sunday night as masked men armed with sticks and rods attacked students and teachers and damaged property on the campus, prompting the administration to call in the police which conducted a flag march.
Meanwhile, several students have started vacating their hostels amid fear following the violence in the smpus last night.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday condemned the attack on students and teachers at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi.
The Chief Minister, who expressed shock over the incident, said violence has no space in democracy and such attacks on students must be condemned unequivocally.
He also appealed the law enforcement agencies to take swift action to apprehend the culprits.
"Shocked to know about the violent #JNUattack. Violence has no space in democracy and such attacks on students must be condemned unequivocally. Appeal law enforcement agencies to take swift action to apprehend the culprits and wish the injured students a speedy recovery," tweeted the Chief Minister.
Similarly, BJP National Vice President Baijayant Panda condemned JNU violence.
"The attack on JNU students is highly condemnable. The opposition is trying its best to keep the protests going on & provoke violence in & outside JNU. All this against CAA. Fuelling anarchy doesn’t help any1. Please think about the nation first. Don’t ruin the education of students," tweeted Panda
