What happens when India’s golden boy of athletics praises one of cricket’s fastest bowlers? A heartwarming sporting gesture, and it is now winning fans on both sides. Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra recently shared some kind words about former Australian speedster Brett Lee, sparking an unexpected but delightful exchange between two legends from different worlds.

Neeraj Believes Lee Had the Arm for It

In a candid interview with JioStar, broadcaster of the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025, the Olympic gold medallist revealed that he once heard Brett Lee was a javelin thrower.

“I think he could throw the javelin well, especially during his peak years,” said Neeraj, who recently clinched silver at the Paris 2024 Olympics, adding to his stellar streak at the Diamond League and Ostrava Golden Spike.

Brett Lee Responds With Admiration

Brett Lee was quick to acknowledge the compliment. “I did throw the javelin back in school, but nowhere near what Neeraj does & continues to do,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter). He admitted the sport was tough on the elbow — one reason he didn’t pursue it further — and praised Neeraj’s extraordinary achievements.
“I have always admired what this fine athlete can do. Wishing him all the best,” Lee wrote.

Lee’s Pitch: A Crossover with Bumrah

Adding a fun twist, Lee expressed interest in trying javelin alongside Indian pace ace Jasprit Bumrah. “I’d love to try it with Bumrah and learn some bowling skills from him too,” Lee added, noting the differences between fast bowling and javelin throwing.

Neeraj, too, shared his curiosity about baseball pitching, showing the mutual love athletes share across sports.
This lighthearted moment is proof: talent recognizes talent — even across disciplines.
