New Delhi: Casting a vote would be much easier for the visually-challenged as the Election Commission has decided to also use the Braille script on all electronic voting machines. "There will be Braille system on every electronic voting machine," Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi told reporters here.

He said instructions have been issued to the authorities to ensure that polling stations are located on the ground floor and ramps are provided to facilitate smooth access to the physically challenged. Arrangements have also been made for locating electors` names in a polling station through helplines and facilitation centres, Quraishi said. In addition, the Commission will also issue voters` slip with a photograph of the voter to enable him to know where his name is enrolled and the serial number on the electoral roll.

The Election Commission announced a seven-phased poll in Uttar Pradesh between February 4 and 28, while assembly elections in Punjab, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa will be held in a single-phase. Punjab and Uttarakhand will go to polls on January 30, while it will be held on January 28 in Manipur and on March 3 in Goa.
