Delhi court order on JNU students’ bail on March 18

New Delhi: A court here on Wednesday reserved for March 18 its order on a bail plea of JNU students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, facing sedition charge.

Delhi Police opposed the bail plea in the court of Additional Sessions Judge Reetesh Singh, saying their case was different from that of JNU Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar.

Both have sought bail on the ground of “parity”, saying that Kanhaiya Kumar was already granted interim bail by the Delhi High court in a sedition case.

Police said Khalid and Anirban were organisers of a controversial event on the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus here where anti-national slogans were raised on February 9. Police said that Kanhaiya Kumar was not the organiser of the event.

Both the students surrendered before police last month outside the gate to the Jawaharlal Nehru UNiversity (JNU) campus.

A case was registered against Khalid and Bhattacharya at the Vasant Kunj police station, soon after Kanhaiya was arrested on the same charge on February 12.
