Kolkata: CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat today said his party would launch a nationwide campaign soon against the Trinamool Congress government's 'attack' on democracy and people's rights in West Bengal.

"The CPI(M) will finalise dates by this month-end regarding a plan to take up a countrywide campaign to project the Trinamool Congress government's attack on people's rights and democracy in West Bengal," Karat said at a CPI(M) state committee meeting here.

Alleging that democracy is in peril in West Bengal, the Marxist said, "It is now becoming clear to the common people how the state government is flouting all democratic norms. This trend has been further manifest in the state government's direct confrontation with the State Election Commission over panchayat poll."

He alleged that the CPI(M) and Left Front leaders and workers in the state had been 'struggling' in the adverse political situation in the state "which may help bring about a change in the political system one day".
