At least two persons of a family allegedly died of diarrhoea in the Paradip-Kujanga area in Jagatsinghpur district. As many as 10 persons have also fallen ill following the outbreak of the disease.
As per reports, 13 days after the death of a family member, his nephew died at Paradeepgarh village in the district on Sunday after suffering from diarrhoea. The affected persons are undergoing treatment in Atharabanki, Kujanga and Jagatsinghpur hospitals.
As per the allegation by the local residents, diarrhoea is spreading in their area due to poor drainage issues and contaminated drinking water.
“Two persons in my family died after suffering from diarrhoea. Several persons in our village have been infected with the contagious disease due to poor drainage and drinking water facilities,” alleged Rajesh Parida, a relative of the deceased.
“Our whole family has suffered from diarrhoea and two of them have passed away. We are in constant fear. Nobody is coming forward to help us,” rued Malati Rout, another relative of the deceased.
“People of the whole area are in a state of panic as diarrhoea is gradually spreading its tentacle. Two persons have passed away and several others have been affected by the fatal disease. However, the administration has done nothing so far to address the issue,” said SK Basir, a resident of the area.
However, Kujanga Hospital Medical Officer Prasanna Panda feigned his ignorance about the development.
“People are getting treated after being infected with diarrhoea and getting cured. However, no death cases due to the disease have been registered so far,” said Panda.
