Bhubaneswar adopts Japan's 'Miyawaki' plantation technique to create urban forests

Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to create nine dense mini-urban forests using Japan's Miyawaki technique to combat Odisha's loss of green cover, rising temperatures, and pollution. Locations have been identified across three zones in the city, with 26,000 trees to be planted. Mayor Sulochana Das and Housing Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra support this initiative.

At a time when Odisha is grappling with the loss of green cover, rising temperature, and pollution, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has brought a new ray of hope for the city dwellers through its ambitious ‘mini urban forest’ project.

The BMC has pledged to create 9 dense and diverse mini-urban forests in the heart of the Capital city using Japan’s ‘Miyawaki’ technique. Nine places have been selected in three zones of Temple City for the ambitious ‘jungle’ project using the Japanese ‘Akira Miyawaki’ method of plantation.

Sources said three locations - BDA store area in Jharpada, open space near Chitrakut Ashram and Sundarpada - in southeast zone; four locations - Kalarahanga crematorium field, ODM field, Gadakana Shakti Vihar and Palasuni MCC, in north zone; and six locations including OJEE campus, Mahabir playground, K6A Laxmipuja ground, Nayapali, Kalinga Studio Square and Dumduma Village football playground in southwest zone have been identified for the purpose.

Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das informed, “Given the land crisis and a lack of open space in the city, creating a jungle is the need of the hour. This technique will help us plant more trees within small spaces and create urban forests amidst the rapid climate change that we are facing. So, I thank all the BMC staff for this ambitious project.”

“Land for the purpose has already been identified in three zones of the city. Nine places have been selected to create jungles. Around 26000 trees will be grown in all the nine places. We are following the Japanese Miyawaki tree planting technique to create dense, diverse forests in less space,” she added.

“Trees that will be beneficial to humans will be planted. Creating a dense forest inside the city will go to a great extent in helping the residents here. I also thank PM Modi for taking such steps across India and in Odisha,” stated Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, Housing & Urban Development Minister, Odisha.
