New Delhi: BJP today dismissed the minority affairs ministry's proposal to set up a task force to look into terror cases against Muslims calling it "politics of opportunism" and said that discriminating between the accused on basis of religion is against the law.

"Nothing more than politics of opportunism is being played here. Had Minority Affairs Minister K Rahman Khan said that he wants to set up a task force for weaker sections, I would have agreed on that but dividing between people on basis of religion is contrary to law and the Constitution of the country," BJP spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi said.

She charged that a similar instance was seen during the 2012 Uttar Pradesh elections where Union Minister Salman Khurshid had also tried to win over the minorities by talking about reservation for Muslims on religious lines.

Asked about Khan's contention that Muslims are being killed in encounters, Lekhi said the Congress leader "reads a little less than others".

She claimed that as per the NHRC data, Hindus are targeted more in encounters.

Lekhi also raised questions about Khan's integrity and charged that there is a case of grabbing and illegally selling Wakf property against him. She wondered how Khan was talking about minority rights when he had allegedly "usurped" Wakf property.
