In a significant crackdown on illegal liquor manufacturing, a joint team comprising the Odisha Police and the Excise Department has dismantled a large-scale illicit country liquor operation in the Jarada police jurisdiction of the Ganjam district.
The coordinated raid led to the seizure of approximately 30,500 liters of fermented wash and 2,200 liters of adulterated country-made liquor, with the total estimated value exceeding Rs 20 lakh.
Illegal Distillery Near Forested Areas
Sources stated that the illicit distillation unit was reportedly operating near a hilly and forested region, exploiting the seclusion to evade detection. Further, the accused individuals were engaged in brewing toxic liquor and distributing it to various locations.
During the operation, law enforcement officials arrested one suspect, identified as Banamali Sabar, while other accomplices managed to flee the scene and are currently absconding, as per last received reports.

State-wide Crackdown Following Hooch Tragedies
Notably, this raid is part of a broader, intensified campaign by the Odisha government to combat the proliferation of illegal liquor operations, especially in the wake of recent hooch deaths in the state.
Since August 2024, a statewide crackdown has been underway, resulting in the identification of over 217 illegal liquor dens and the arrest of more than 117 individuals. The government has also emphasised a zero-tolerance policy towards such activities, aiming to prevent further loss of life and ensure public safety.

As per sources, the Excise Department has proposed the establishment of additional excise stations to strengthen enforcement capabilities across the state. It is also worth noting that Odisha has expedited raids on illegal liquor trades and cannabis cultivation to boost the law and order situation in the state.
