The millennium city of Cuttack has become the latest city to witness a shocking case of fraud involving a fake police officer. The accused, identified as Gundicha Dalei, was apprehended by the Badambadi police for allegedly extorting Rs 1.5 lakh from an unsuspecting job aspirant under false pretences.
According to the police, Dalei introduced himself as an inspector from the Cuttack Rural Police and assured one Jitanshu Shekhar Parida, an aspiring home guard candidate, of a secure job placement.
Trusting Dalei’s words, Parida handed over Rs 1.5 lakh as an advance payment. However, when he did not receive any confirmation regarding his employment, he realized that he had been duped and promptly filed a complaint with the police.
“A complainant alleged that one Gundicha Dalei promised him to secure a home guard job. The complainant is working as a security guard. The accused was aware that the security guard had applied for the home guard job. The accused had identified himself as a cop. Based on the complaint, a case was registered and the accused was nabbed. He has already duped around 30 to 40 aspirants. During search, we have seized several fake police uniforms, identity cards, name plate, cap and other articles. We have frozen around Rs 4 lakh in his bank account,”informed Cuttack DCP.
Upon receiving the complaint, the police launched an investigation, leading to the swift arrest of Dalei.
In a press briefing, Cuttack DCP disclosed that the accused was a habitual fraudster and had allegedly deceived around 30 to 40 individuals using the same modus operandi.
The authorities have frozen Rs 4 lakh in Dalei’s bank account, which is suspected to have been acquired through similar scams. Additionally, police recovered crucial pieces of evidence, including fake police uniforms, caps, forged identity cards, official stamps, and mobile phones, all of which were used to establish his false identity.
