Amidst outrage over inflated billing by Tata Power Western Odisha Distribution Limited (TPWODL), Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo has warned of strict action against those removing their meters. Singh, also the Energy Minister stated that consumers were not authorised to remove meters installed by the power distribution licensee.
“It involves the risk of getting electrocuted. If consumers have any doubt or complaint about the proper functioning of meters, they are required to inform the company for replacement,” Singh stated.
He further said that the government will be left with no option but to ask TATA to disconnect the electricity to consumers who have removed their meters. Then, they will have to re-apply for a new connection with the payment of all dues including the power they have consumed during the period without the meter, Singh added.
Meanwhile, angry farmers and residents are protesting over the alleged unethical practices by the discom, wrong and inflated billing as well as coercive measures for consumers’ inability to pay.
