AMU demand Sachar report implementation

Aligarh: Students of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) have demanded from the Centre immediate implementation of recommendations of the Sachar Committee on backwardness of Muslim community.

At a convention of Muslim organisations here in the campus yesterday, the AMU Students` Union (AMUSU) announced that they will take up the issue of reservation of Muslims "proportionate to their population in the country."

Speaking on the occasion, union president Syed Sharique Ahmad said it was a "travesty of justice" that reports of various enquiry commissions on different communal problems were biting the dust over the years.

Pointing out that the community was not making any new demands, he described the recent decision by the Centre to provide 4.5 per cent sub-quota to the community as a "good" but "inadequate" move.

Addressing the convention, Mufti Rashid Azmi of Darul Uloom Deoband, the largest Muslim seminary, pledged to support full support the the AMU students in this regard.

Several other representatives from various other minority Muslim organisations expressed their views in this regard.
