Odisha is bracing for another spell of heavy rainfall as a fresh low-pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal within the next 48 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted on Tuesday.
According to the weather office, a cyclonic circulation has already developed over the west-central Bay of Bengal and is expected to intensify into a low-pressure system. Under its influence, widespread and heavy rainfall is likely to lash several parts of the state from tomorrow till August 29.
The system is also likely to gradually strengthen into a more active circulation in the next 48 hours, further enhancing rainfall activity across coastal and interior districts. At present, rain continues to lash several regions due to the prevailing cyclonic circulation.
The IMD has issued a yellow warning for 10 districts for the next 24 hours, cautioning residents about possible waterlogging, flash floods and disruption of transport. The coastal belts of Odisha and West Bengal are expected to bear the brunt as the system intensifies.
Authorities have advised district administrations to remain on alert and ensure preparedness in view of the fresh rainfall threat, especially in flood-prone areas where rivers are already swollen from previous spells of rain.
“A cyclonic circulation is now lying over north-west of Bay of Bengal and its adjoining area. Under its influence, a low pressure is likely to form within 48 hours. Under the influence of the system, Odisha is likely to witness rainfall activities for the next three-four days. North and South Odisha are likely to witness rainfall activities in the next 24 hours,” said Manorama Mohanty, Director, Meteorological Centre Bhubaneswar.
