Acting often brings cheers and tears to the audience. Sensitive audience often gets lost in lively dramas and plays and they identify and sympathise with different characters. In a similar kind of situation, some jatra (opera party) artists’ portrayal of villain characters who are very unkind towards the hero was so real that spectators couldn’t help but vent their anger on them.
As per reports, the incident happened at Naxapali area in Sambalpur district earlier last week. Swarna Mahala Opera was performing a play- ‘Swami Pain Narkaku Jibi’ in the area. During the play, three to four villains thrashed the hero by fettering him on a pole as part of their acting.
Their acting was so real and devilish that, some audience became reactive. Initially, they hurled bottles on the stage after seeing the acts and hearing the dialogues of the villains. Subsequently, they went on the stage and thrashed the villains.
The situation came to such a pass that the play had to be stopped for some time and the opera committee members had to intervene. They somehow pacified the angry spectators following which the show resumed.
