Counting for the bypoll to Padampur Assembly constituency in Odisha's Bargarh district started today at 8 am. There will be 23 rounds of counting for the by-election. So, the counting process is likely to continue for a longer time.
Odisha's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sushil Kumar Lohani had earlier informed that postal ballots would be counted first, following that, votes polled in 319 booths would be counted in 14 tables in each round.
Each table has three persons, one counting supervisor, one counting assistant and one micro observer (who belongs to the Central government).
EVM and postal ballot counting is over, and tallying of VVPAT is underway. BJD candidate Barsha Singh Bariha secured 1,20,807 votes, BJP’s Pradeep Purohit was next with 78,128 votes, Congress’ Satya Bhushan Sahu got 3594 votes, informs Odisha CEO Sushil Lohani
The stakes were high for the Padampur seat and eventually, it was BJD that registered a thumping victory in the crucial byelection battle. BJD candidate Barsha Singh Bariha defeated BJP’s Pradip Purohit with a margin of over 42,000 votes.

As the BJD is likely to win the Padampur bypoll, BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi today said that the party needs to introspect. "There may have been some lacunae in the planning. But I am sure the people of Padampur will support us in 2024," she said.
BJD candidate Barsha Singh Bariha continues to strengthen her lead and is likely to win the Padampur bypoll. After the 17th round of counting of votes, she is now leading by 30059 votes.
With the end of the 13th round of votes counting, BJD candidate Barsha Singh Bariha has further strengthened her lead. She is now leading by 24058 votes.
