PM Modi becomes the first global leader to receive Ethiopia’s highest award; 28th foreign State honour

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred with Ethiopia's highest civilian award on Tuesday, The Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia, making him the first global Head of State or Government to receive the prestigious accolade. The award was conferred by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali during PM Modi’s two-day visit to the country.

This honour marks the 28th top foreign state award bestowed on PM Modi. Accepting the recognition, PM Modi said that it belongs to the people of India, whose trust and contributions have strengthened India–Ethiopia relations. 

“To be honoured by one of the world’s most ancient civilisations is a matter of great pride. I humbly accept this on behalf of 140 crore Indians,” he said.

India–Ethiopia Ties Elevated to Strategic Partnership

During bilateral talks, India and Ethiopia elevated their relationship to a strategic partnership. PM Modi said the decision would give bilateral ties “new energy, new speed and new depth,” noting that both nations are democratic partners committed to peace, development and the welfare of the Global South.

Highlighting centuries-old people-to-people links, PM Modi lauded the role of Indian teachers in Ethiopia’s education system, calling education the foundation of national progress. He also recalled Ethiopia’s support on global platforms and India’s role in facilitating the African Union’s entry into the G20 in 2023.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali welcomed PM Modi warmly and said Ethiopia’s economy is performing strongly. The BJP termed the honour a reflection of India’s rising global stature and PM Modi’s respected leadership on the world stage.
