Israel targets Beirut as regional tensions escalate; Kuwait downs drones

Iran has vowed to avenge the death of its Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed during Israeli airstrikes as part of a joint military operation with the United States. Following confirmation of Khamenei's death on Sunday, Iran launched retaliatory strikes targeting the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain, escalating tensions across the West Asia region. The situation has now spiraled further out of control, spilling over into Lebanon and beyond.

Hezbollah, a militant group aligned with Iran's "axis of resistance," responded by launching rocket and drone attacks against a military base near Haifa in northern Israel. The group emphasized in a statement that Israel's continued aggression and the killing of their leaders and civilians justified their right to self-defense and retaliation. In response, Israel launched retaliatory strikes against the Lebanese capital of Beirut, leading to growing concern of a wider regional conflict.

Fighting Spreads to Other Countries

As the conflict intensifies, Israel has issued evacuation orders to residents in 53 villages and towns in southern Lebanon, including Bint Jbeil. The Israeli military has escalated its strikes and raids in the region after Hezbollah’s attack. Meanwhile, Jordan's military intercepted 49 drones and ballistic missiles on Sunday, while explosions were reported in Qatar. Kuwait's air defense systems also intercepted aerial threats, with Iran claiming responsibility for attacks on a U.S. naval base in Kuwait.

Iran Appoints Interim Leader Amid Crisis

In the wake of Khamenei's death, Iran has appointed Ayatollah Alireza Arafi as the interim Supreme Leader. Arafi will lead the country alongside President Masoud Pezeshkian and Chief Justice Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i until a new leader is elected. The leadership changes come amid continued military operations and rising casualties, including the reported deaths of around 180 children in a missile attack on a girls’ school in Iran.
