Eyewitnesses at Greece’s Chania International Airport, which shares a runway with the Souda Bay Naval Base in Crete, reported the arrival of multiple F-22 Raptor stealth fighters. Videos circulating on social media showed the advanced jets landing on the island, a strategic gateway to the Middle East.

The Pentagon described the deployment as routine and aimed at bolstering regional stability. However, military analysts say positioning the US Air Force’s premier air-superiority fighter closer to Iranian airspace could signal preparations for a potential rapid-response strike.

Hypersonic weapon sparks questions

Adding to the tension, the US Army briefly published and then deleted photos of its Dark Eagle Long Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW). The system is a ground-launched missile capable of traveling at speeds above Mach 5, making interception extremely difficult.

Defense observers noted the images suggested the weapon was in advanced operational readiness. The sudden removal of the photos has fueled speculation that the hypersonic system may have been forward-deployed.

Diplomatic pressure mounts

The military movements coincide with renewed diplomatic pressure. US President Donald Trump has publicly urged Tehran to accept a “fair deal” on its nuclear programme and regional activities, warning that failure to do so could lead to serious consequences.
