Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are preparing with anticipation for the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), with hopes that this might finally be their year to secure the coveted title. The team has previously reached the finals on three occasions but has yet to win the championship.
Humorous Prediction from a Cricket Legend
In a light-hearted prediction, Australian cricket legend Adam Gilchrist, who has a history of success in the IPL, jokingly suggested that RCB might finish at the bottom of the table in IPL 2025. Speaking on the Club Prairie Fire podcast, Gilchrist attributed this prediction to RCB's recruitment of several English players.
'I think there's a fair chance (that RCB finish last), because I'm basing it on the fact that there's just too many Englishmen in the squad,' he remarked humorously.
Gilchrist's comments, primarily made in jest, were directed at Michael Vaughan, the former England captain and podcast co-host. 'Nothing against Virat, nothing against their fans. I apologise to the fans, but you've got to talk to your recruiting agents,' Gilchrist clarified, recalling his triumph as captain of the Deccan Chargers over RCB in the 2009 IPL final.
English Players Join RCB
RCB's strategy in the IPL 2025 mega auction involved a significant focus on signing English cricketers. Phil Salt, who impressed in IPL 2024 with Kolkata Knight Riders, was acquired for Rs 11.5 crore. RCB also secured Liam Livingstone and Jacob Bethell for INR 8.75 crore and Rs 2.6 crore, respectively, adding to their international roster.
Fellow Prediction for Delhi Capitals' Struggles
Michael Vaughan offered his own prediction for the upcoming season, speculating that Delhi Capitals (DC) might struggle, and potentially finishing last. Vaughan highlighted what he perceives as a lack of top-tier Indian batsmen in the DC squad, a crucial element for success on Indian pitches. 'I just don't think they (DC) have got a very good team,' he stated.
Both RCB and DC have been a part of every IPL season since its inception yet have never claimed the championship. RCB will begin their IPL 2025 campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders on Saturday, 22 March.
