In a significant development in the mango kernel tragedy in Kandhamal district, the two patients undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) in Cuttack have been diagnosed with hepatitis, leading to multi-organ failure.
Both their kidneys and livers have been damaged, informed Public Health Director Nilakantha Mishra on Monday.
Speaking to the media, Public Health Director Nilakanth Mishra informed, “We have learnt that the two patients, who have been transferred to Cuttack SCB are suffering from hepatitis. We suspect it to be caused by a fungal infection. They consumed the mango kernel that was kept for two-three days, leading to fungal growth.”
“Any inflammation in the liver is called hepatitis. They have multi-organ failure. Both of their liver and kidneys have been affected. They are currently under treatment,” he added.
Likewise, Health Director Dr. Bijay Mohapatra said, “They needed better treatment, so we have transferred them to Cuttack-based SCB Medical College and Hospital. They are currently under treatment. They have multi-organ failure, and treatment is going on.”
Worth mentioning, two women died while six others were taken ill after consuming mango kernel at Mandipanka village under Daringbadi block in tribal-dominated Kandhamal district. Out of the six, two are currently undergoing treatment at SCB while the remaining four were admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.
