At least three tuskers, believed to have come from Dalma elephant sanctuary in neighbouring Jharkhand, had entered Mayurbhanj district crossing the forest all the way through West Bengal forests.

One tusker had trampled to death a seventh standard girl student, Ambika Jena at Gambharia under Badasahi police station and injured another 60-year-old man in the village on Saturday, he said.

Another tusker got into Baripada municipal area and attacked morning walkers in which 10 persons including six women were injured, three of them seriously.

Eight injured were being treated at the district headquarters hospital here, Swain said adding the tusker which killed Marandi today had also attacked the morning walkers at Baripada yesterday.

The tuskers were still roaming in the nearby sal forests and effort was on to chase them them away from the area. However, incessant heavy rains lashing the area since yesterday was an impediment in carrying out the operation, he said.
