Maa Durga’s Kalaratri form
On the seventh day of Navratri, devotees worship Maa Kalaratri, one of the fiercest and most powerful manifestations of Goddess Durga. Known as the destroyer of darkness and evil forces, she represents the energy that removes ignorance and fear from the lives of her devotees. Despite her fearsome appearance, Maa Kalaratri is also revered as a compassionate mother who protects her children from harm.
Maa Kalaratri is depicted with a dark complexion, unkempt hair, and a necklace flashing like lightning. She has three eyes that shine like the universe, and her breath is believed to ignite flames of fire. The Goddess rides a donkey and is shown with four hands, two hands raised in Abhaya (fear-dispelling) and Varada (granting boons) mudras, while the other two carry a sword and an iron hook. This fierce form symbolises the ultimate power that eliminates all forms of negativity, obstacles, and demonic energies.
Spiritual Significance
Worship of Maa Kalaratri during Durga Puja is considered highly auspicious, as she is believed to grant protection from evil spirits, ghosts, and negative influences. She embodies the triumph of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. Devotees believe that by seeking her blessings, they are infused with courage, fearlessness, and resilience to face life’s challenges. Her worship is also said to open the path towards spiritual awakening by destroying illusions and attachments.
