Devotion to the Goddess Durga is evident in the intricate way the idol has been adorned at Kolkata’s 66-Palli Durga Puja pandal this year. The tableau is so striking that it is certain to make visitors pause, feel a shiver of awe, and reflect on its symbolism.
The pandal features a depiction inspired by Kerala. In Kerala and Karnataka, the traditional Theyyam dance is performed, for which distinct makeup and costumes are used. A glimpse of this cultural form was seen in the film Kantara. Following this tradition, the 66-Palli pandal has incorporated separate makeup and costume-inspired elements for the idol of Goddess Durga.
Ferocious Imagery of Maa Durga
The idol presents Maa Durga in a ferocious form, mounted on a lion and slaying the demon Mahishasura, who is painted green. Observing the face and the body of the idol is enough to send shivers down one’s spine. The pandal itself has been designed to resemble a rural Kerala home, complete with Khaprail tiles and stone pillars, adding authenticity to the theme.
Cultural Unity Through Festivals
This pandal highlights the diversity of India, demonstrating that while cultures and traditions vary between Karnataka, Kerala, and West Bengal, festivals serve to unite people, bringing together customs, heritage, and artistry from across the country.
Devotee Reactions
One of the devotees present said, "We had never seen a pandal in this theme. It looks beautiful and we liked it."
The unique Kerala-inspired design has captured the attention of visitors, leaving a lasting impression on those attending the festival.
