“A new WTC cycle is starting. Future and continuity have to be kept in mind,” a senior BCCI source was quoted as saying.
“Even coach Gautam Gambhir would want a set of players he’s likely to work with for a long period. There can’t be any stop-gap captaincy solutions for such a crucial series.”

The conversation around Kohli’s captaincy return gained momentum after he dropped subtle hints about retirement during the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Though he started strong with a century at Perth, the veteran batter managed only 190 runs across five Tests, leading to scrutiny over his form and raising concerns about his longevity in the format.
Despite the slump, Kohli’s importance to the team remains undeniable. “He’s still incredibly fit and hungry. His presence in the dressing room lifts the entire team,” said a senior BCCI official.
