Vijay–Sangeetha Sornalingam’s shocking split after 25 years: Inside the journey of a ₹400 crore heiress who once was his fangirl

Tamil cinema superstar and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay’s personal life made unexpected headlines on Friday after reports emerged that his wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, has filed for divorce. The development has drawn widespread attention, not just because of Vijay’s political and cinematic stature, but also due to Sangeeta’s long-standing low-profile presence. 

According to reports, the couple — married for over two decades — are now facing a legal separation following serious allegations mentioned in the petition.

Who is Sangeeta Sornalingam?

Sangeetha Sornalingam, a Sri Lankan Tamil raised in London, is the daughter of London-based businessman Sornalingam. Her connection with Vijay began as admiration when she watched him in the 1996 romantic drama Poove Unakkaga. 

Determined to meet the rising star, she travelled from London to Chennai and reportedly stayed in touch through letters during her time at the University of London. What began as admiration soon evolved into love. Their relationship culminated in a grand wedding held on 25 August 1999, conducted as per both Christian and Hindu traditions and attended by Vijay’s devoted fans.

Despite being married to one of South India’s biggest stars, Sangeeta largely stayed away from media attention. Reports suggest she later relocated to London to manage her family business and possesses assets exceeding ₹400 crore.

Family Away From the Spotlight

The couple share two children — son Jason Sanjay and daughter Divya Saasha. Much like their mother, both have largely maintained privacy. Jason briefly appeared alongside Vijay in Vettaikaaran (2009) and is now preparing for his directorial debut Sigma, starring Sundeep Kishan. Divya Saasha, who appeared in Theri (2016), is reportedly pursuing badminton professionally.

The Divorce Petition and Allegations

The legal proceedings gained momentum after ANI reported: “Actor & TVK chief Vijay’s wife, Sangeetha, has filed a petition for divorce in the Chengalpattu family court. In her petition, Sangeetha has accused Vijay of having an extramarital relationship (with an actress) and has sought divorce on those grounds.”

The petition further states that in 2021, Sangeetha discovered Vijay "was involved in an adulterous relationship with an actress." It alleges that despite assurances from the actor that the relationship would end, it reportedly continued. 

As legal proceedings unfold, fans remain stunned by the apparent end of one of Tamil cinema’s most enduring marriages.
