Born Jatin Khanna, Rajesh Khanna redefined Hindi cinema with his romantic aura, timeless melodies and unprecedented superstardom. Celebrated as India’s first superstar, Kaka’s influence extended far beyond the silver screen. Two Icons, One Golden Era
Rajesh Khanna and Vinod Khanna ruled the big screen during the 1960s and 1970s. Films such as Aan Milo Sajna and Sachaa Jhutha showcased their charisma and acting prowess. While their cinematic journeys flourished, both later stepped into politics- an arena that eventually sparked an unexpected war of words.
When Kaka Spoke His Mind
In one of his final interviews before his death in 2012, Rajesh Khanna did not mince words while speaking about Vinod Khanna’s political stint. Reflecting on the Gurdaspur constituency, he remarked, “Vinod Khanna had made a bundle of promises with the voters in Gurdaspur, including that he would set up a film academy, but never honoured his words.
The voters threw him out.” The statement quickly became a talking point, revealing Kaka’s blunt stance on political accountability.
Vinod Khanna’s Political Rise and Fall
Vinod Khanna entered politics in the late 1990s and won the Gurdaspur seat in 1997 on a BJP ticket, followed by victories in 1999 and 2004. His journey included key roles as Union Minister for Culture and Tourism and Minister of State for External Affairs. However, his defeat in 2009 marked a turning point, lending weight to Rajesh Khanna’s criticism. Vinod later returned to Parliament in 2014.
A Lesson in Political Ethics
Rajesh, himself an MP from New Delhi, strongly believed in responsible leadership. Sharing his philosophy, he said, “I would never like to ditch my own people with hollow promises like other politicians. I am of the opinion that when you are not able to serve the masses, then don’t make fake promises to them since these are the sins.”
