At OTV Foresight 2026, actor Shreyas Talpade shared insightful thoughts during a session titled “Rise of Regional Cinemas: A New Development Story in New Indian Film Industry”, highlighting how regional films have evolved from being region-bound to becoming truly pan-Indian and global.
From Regional to Pan-Indian Appeal
Addressing how regional cinemas were earlier limited to specific states and regions, Shreyas noted that today the scenario has completely changed. Films made in languages like Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, or Odia are no longer confined to local audiences. With subtitles and dubbed versions, these films now reach viewers across India and even globally.
He explained that language, once seen as a barrier, has now turned into the biggest strength—or USP—of regional cinema, helping it gain wider acceptance.
Technology and Platforms Fuel Growth
Shreyas emphasised that technological advancements and new platforms have played a major role in this rise. Earlier, regional films were restricted to specific belts and formats like VHS. Today, with digital platforms and easy access to content on screens, regional cinema has found a much larger audience base.
Post-Covid Acceptance and the Rise of OTT
When asked why regional cinema gained massive popularity post-Covid, Shreyas responded that audiences are ultimately drawn to good stories and strong content. During the pandemic, the rapid rise of OTT platforms exposed viewers to diverse stories in different languages, breaking long-standing viewing habits and expanding taste.
Role of Voiceovers and Star Power
On the role of dubbing and voiceovers, Shreyas pointed out that when audiences connect a familiar star with a regional film, it significantly boosts reach. For instance, if a popular star like Allu Arjun dubs for a Marathi or Odia film, the movie automatically attracts a much larger fan base.
Open to Odia Cinema and New Challenges
Responding to whether he would accept an offer from the Odia film industry—as an actor or dubbing artist—Shreyas said he would gladly consider it. He added that language is never a barrier for him, given his theatre background, where performing in multiple languages is common. Any role, film, or language that offers a challenge and excitement is something he would definitely be open to.
