Hrithik Roshan, celebrated as one of Bollywood’s finest actors, has carved an extraordinary career marked by stellar performances, striking looks, and mesmerizing dance skills. Known for blockbusters like Agneepath and Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai and many more, he remains a beloved figure in Indian cinema.
Yet beyond the silver screen, Hrithik shared a deeply personal bond with his former mother-in-law, the late Zarine Khan, who always regarded him as more than just a star calling him “her son for life,” even years after his divorce from Sussanne Khan.
Late interior designer and author Zarine Khan, mother of Sussanne Khan and former mother-in-law of Hrithik Roshan, once shared a deeply affectionate bond with the Bollywood superstar. Known for her warmth and candour, Zarine often spoke fondly of Hrithik even after his divorce from her daughter calling him her ‘son for life’. Their relationship remained a testament to love, respect, and enduring family ties beyond marriage.
‘He Loved Her Even When She Was at Her Ugliest Worst’
In a 2012 interview, Zarine recalled how Hrithik had set his heart on Sussanne long before fame found him. “When Sussanne was at her ugliest worst, with her two front teeth protruding, a young Duggu said, ‘She’s the girl I’ll marry,’” she shared. Hrithik, who then battled a stutter, found in Sussanne his biggest supporter the one who guided and inspired him through his early years.
Their love blossomed, and after Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai turned Hrithik into a star, the two tied the knot, fulfilling the promise they made in their youth.
‘He Could Be a Great Spiritual Leader’
Zarine often described Hrithik as calm, compassionate, and spiritual. “His heart is so gentle; he never holds grudges,” she said, adding that he could have been a 'great spiritual leader' if not an actor.
‘Bonded for Life’ Despite Divorce
Even after their 2014 split, Hrithik and Sussanne co-parented their sons, Hridaan and Hrehaan, with grace. Zarine cherished their enduring bond, once saying, “He is the father of my grandchildren we are bonded for life.”
In her final interviews, Zarine reiterated that love and family transcend labels and that for her, Hrithik would always remain 'my son.'
Zarine Khan passed away on November 7 after suffering a cardiac arrest in Mumbai.
