The hostel warden of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya at Khunta area in Mayurbhanj district has been disengaged from duties on Sunday following the death of a class VI student at the school hostel on Saturday. The District Education Officer has also recommended the suspension of the headmistress of the said institution.
According to a letter issued by the District Education Officer, the suspension of Gayatri Sethi, the headmistress of the school has been recommended and Madhumita Behera, hostel warden, has been disengaged from service on charges of dereliction of duty.
“Due to public agitation and local people protest immediate action has been taken & Smt Minati Mohapatra Warden dis-engaged from her service…,” the letter read.
“…. Sethi has not performing her duty properly & due to lack of proper supervision & immediate steps, such a major incidents happened in the hostel. So, it is submitted necessary steps many kindly be taken including suspension order against Smt Gayatri Sethi, Senior SES, Khunta Govt HS, Khunta Block as per rule,” the letter read further.
The action from the District Education Officer came after the family members of the deceased girl student, identified as Madhusmita Behera, and locals staged a road blockade on the State Highway near Khunta chhak demanding adequate compensation and action against the erring officials.
According to sources, Madhusmita, a class VI student residing in the hostel of the institution, suddenly fell sick on Saturday night.
She was immediately rushed to Khunta hospital where the doctor declared her dead on arrival, a source informed, adding that in what circumstance she died is still unclear.
