Sanitation workers took to the streets on Friday, protesting outside the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) office demanding justice for their union president Sahadeb Nayak who was recently murdered in the Capital city.

The protest, organised under the banner of Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, highlighted the workers’ demands for stringent action against the perpetrators, a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) enquiry into the incident, compensation for Nayak’s family, and the provision of employment for one member of his family.

The sanitation workers have warned that they will stop their work and halt cleaning operations across the entire city wards till their demands are met.

“Though five persons have been arrested in connection with Nayak’s murder so far, we are not satisfied with the investigation process. He was an innocent person. He was standing behind us in all our problems. Though he was murdered in broad daylight, police didn’t do anything to save him. The administration has done nothing for his family members so far,” rued a protestor.

“Apart from the arrested persons, some other persons are also involved in the murder case. They should be arrested soon. So long as Nayak’s family members are not provided proper assistance, we will not resume our work,” said another protestor.

Notably, Nayak was hacked to death near the Rasulgarh flyover when he was returning on a scooter after dropping his daughter at her school.
