“Working on Devdas Was a Nightmare”

Recalling their early years in Bollywood, Abu Jani revealed how professionalism was often lacking. “In those days, payments were delayed, schedules were chaotic, and everything revolved around the hero. Even by 2002, Devdas was a nightmare we had to constantly stay ready with costumes,” he shared.

His partner Sandeep Khosla echoed both admiration and exhaustion. Calling Bhansali “a genius,” he praised the director’s creative freedom but recalled the chaos that erupted mid-production when producer Bharat Shah was arrested in 2001 for alleged underworld links. “Getting paid became a nightmare. We were still finishing garments like the ‘Dola Re’ costumes at the last minute. But no regrets, it won us a National Award,” Sandeep smiled.
