Cinema should not be judged with Rs 100 crore mark: Chopra

Chopra`s latest offering as a producer-writer is `Ferrari Ki Sawari` starring Sharman Joshi and Boman Irani in the lead. The film opened to cinema houses today. "Cinema should do not be judged with Rs 100 crore mark...it is sad. I hate it when called Rs 100 crore mark. I am way ahead of this mark I am four-five times ahead of this mark.

Our films have done much more than this like Rs 400 crore or Rs 450 crore. If `Ferrari Ki Sawari` does Rs 100 crore or Rs 200 crore or Rs 400 crore or even does Rs two I would be happy as I know the film is very good and touching," Chopra told reporters here, at the premiere of the film.

"Cinema has different value. For cinema Rs 100 crore business is not right, the film to do a Rs 100 crore or Rs 200 crore business or Rs two the film should be good.. (that) should be important. The job of cinema is to entertain people," he said.

Chopra`s `3 Idiots` was made at a budget of around Rs 35 crore and it went on to do a business of approximately Rs 385 crore. His other film, `Lage Raho Munnabhai` was made at a budget of Rs 12 crore and it earned Rs 119 crore at the box office. His latest film, `Ferrari Ki Sawaari` is made at budget of Rs 20 crore.

Filmmaker Raju Hirani, who had directed both `3 Idiots` and `Lage Raho Munnabhai` and written dialogues for `Ferrari Ki Sawari`, says, "We don`t make film keeping in mind this (Rs 100 crore mark) thing that so and so crore the film should make. If that was the intention, then we would have made two-three films every year."

When asked to comment on the Rs 100 crore mark, actor Aamir Khan said, "I don`t go into numbers too much. Different kinds of films come out every year. And every film is different; we can`t judge the success of a film with numbers."

While, Boman Irani said, "Don`t ask me about money. It is important in a way as producers have put in money so they should get returns. But the kind of films that Vidhu Vinod Chopra makes they give importance to story, the script and they ensure that people like it. I don`t know anything about money, it is important that the film should touch people`s heart."

Actor Sonu Sood, who played the role of a villain in `Dabangg` was a blockbuster film earning approximately Rs 215 crore at the box office, does not believe in number game.

"I don`t believe in this (Rs 100 crore club). Every film has a size, and has a specific budget and recovery happens accordingly. If a Rs four crore film earns Rs 15 crore, then it is a hit. Films must be successful but numbers are not that important, but again if numbers happen then nothing better," Sood said.
