Choreographer Subal Sarkar passes away

Sarkar was not keeping well for a long time and had been hospitalised. He was being treated at home for the last two months, family sources said.

Sarkar, who is best remembered for his choreography in Marathi films, had choreographed most of Dada Kondke`s movies and the lavni numbers. Among his films were Maan Apman (1979), Ankush (1986), Pratighat (1987), Ashi hi Banva Banvi (1988) and recent years were Mohityanchi Renuka, Tahaan and Aba Zindabad. He had won the Maharashtra state award nine times.

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan described Sarkar as a symbol of national integration.

State Tourism Minister Chhagan Bhujbal said, "Marathi film industry has lost one of the great artistes. Even though Sarkar choreographed lavni dance numbers, he was never repetitive and experimented with lot of variety."
