Casting twist: Shah Rukh Khan was the first choice for Saif Ali Khan’s role in Hum Saath Saath Hain

Even years after its release, Hum Saath-Saath Hain continues to be remembered as one of the most iconic family entertainers in Hindi cinema. In an interesting Bollywood revelation, filmmaker Sooraj Barjatya once considered casting Shah Rukh Khan in the 1999 family drama Hum Saath‑Saath Hain, a role that was eventually played by Saif Ali Khan.

Barjatya shared in an interview that discussions had taken place with Shah Rukh Khan for the character of the youngest son in the Chaturvedi family. The role later went to Saif Ali Khan, who was paired opposite Karisma Kapoor in the film. However, the director did not reveal why the collaboration with SRK ultimately did not materialise.

Interestingly, Saif Ali Khan himself was reportedly nervous during the film’s shoot as he was going through a difficult phase in his career. The actor put immense pressure on himself to perform well alongside such a large ensemble cast and reportedly rehearsed his scenes repeatedly to perfect his performance.

Despite the early casting discussions with Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan’s portrayal of the cheerful and carefree Vinod eventually became one of the memorable characters of the film. The movie remains a cult family entertainer even decades after its release.

Had Shah Rukh Khan accepted the role, Hum Saath-Saath Hain could have featured both SRK and Salman Khan together in a Rajshri family drama, something fans still find fascinating to imagine.
