A youth from Rajgangpur went missing on Monday while bathing at the Badalgiri waterfall under Gurundia police limits in Sundargarh district.
The missing youth has been identified as Gaurav Bipra, who was part of a 13-member group that had visited the waterfall for a picnic, despite warnings issued by the forest department due to heavy rainfall in the region.
Youth Swept Away by Strong Current
According to reports, the group climbed down to the waterbody where there are no designated steps or safety arrangements and began bathing, ignoring warnings in place due to recent incessant rains. During this time, Gaurav was swept away by the strong current. His friends attempted to rescue him but failed.
Challenging Terrain Delayed Alert to Police
Due to the location of the waterfall being deep inside the forest and away from populated areas, the group struggled to find immediate help. They later reached Gurundia Police Station and informed the authorities about the incident. As of now, Gaurav remains untraceable and rescue operations are ongoing.
Site Not Safe for Visitors
According to reports, such incidents have become a recurring problem, as visitors continue to frequent the spot each year without adhering to safety instructions. The forest department had already restricted access to the site due to dangerous conditions caused by monsoon rainfall.
SDPO said, “We are currently searching for the missing youth. Restrictions have been imposed on visiting the area as it is unsafe, especially during the rains. Efforts are underway to locate him.”
Authorities have again urged the public to avoid visiting such unmonitored locations.
