On Day 4 of the third BGT Test between India and Australia in Brisbane, Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma continued his rough patch. Resuming the innings with KL Rahul on the fourth day of the match, the captain could only manage 10 runs before being dismissed by Pat Cummins. This dismissal added to his struggle in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he has scored only 19 runs in three innings.

However, what caught everyone’s attention was the skipper’s unusual action after his dismissal. Instead of taking his gloves inside the Team India dugout, he left them outside, sparking speculations about his retirement from Test cricket.

Fans took to social media, sharing pictures and questioning if this gesture was a hint at his retirement. Reactions ranged from sympathy to hope.

“I can understand his pain,” wrote one. Others followed with “You cannot win a World Cup everyday” and “It is okay, we feel you”. However, other Indian cricket fans were not so empathetic and thought that it was finally time for Sharma to hand over the captaincy.

“He is done now Bumrah must take over,” said one user while others replied with similar emotions including “The good days are behind” and “He can bounce back but better he leaves captaincy”.

The 37-year-old’s form has been a concern beyond this series, as he scored just 91 runs across six innings in the recent home series against New Zealand. As such, his Test performance has been underwhelming, despite him leading India to victory in the T20 World Cup 2024 and announcing his retirement from the T20 format.

Meanwhile, there are also rumors that he may retire from the ODI format after the Champions Trophy next year. If he fails to perform in the remaining two Test matches, the selectors might reconsider his place in the team as India prepares for the next WTC cycle.
