In a significant laurel, The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela has secured a place in the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2025, marking its debut among Asia’s top 200 institutions.

It is now the 12th-highest-ranked Indian university and the only NIT in the country to feature in this prestigious list. Placed 191st, the institute also ranks among the top twenty in the country. In overall metrics, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, topped the list this year, with its global rank of 38.

Global Recognition Through Rigorous Metrics

THE evaluated 853 universities across 35 Asian countries using 18 performance indicators, including research output, teaching quality, knowledge transfer, and international collaboration. 

NIT-Rourkela’s rise reflects its strengthened focus on cutting-edge research, industry partnerships, and academic innovation.

Achievement Amplifies Recent Government Recognition

The ranking milestone comes weeks after the Central Government designated NIT-Rourkela as Eastern India’s nodal research hub. Under this initiative, the institute will lead a collaborative program to enhance research capabilities across six universities in Odisha, supported by central funding.

The project aims to address regional disparities in research infrastructure and foster interdisciplinary work in emerging fields like artificial intelligence, clean energy, and sustainable development.
