Berhampur: Unidentified miscreants gunned down a youth allegedly over past rivalry at Gothagam village under Sheragada police limits of Ganjam district late Sunday night.

The deceased identified as Yogendra Swain alias Yogi was a contractor by profession and was not in good terms with former village Sarpanch Shibaram Sethi over some construction work, reveal sources.

According to reports, around 10.30 pm last night Yogi along with his associates was assisting Bol Bom devotees at the nearby ghat when four miscreants in two motor-bikes reached the spot and opened fired at him.

“I was sleeping when the incident took place and rushed to the spot after being informed and found my brother lying in a pool of blood. They had fired two rounds of bullets on him. We immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital in Hinjili from where he was referred to MKCG Medical Collage and Hospital in Berhampur,” informed Yogi’s brother adding that Sethi was behind the murder.

The doctors at MKCG referred him to Vishakhapatnam after his condition deteriorated. However, Yogi succumbed to the injuries on the way to Vishakhapatnam.

“Family members of the deceased suspect the role of former village Sarpanch Sethi and his associates behind the crime. Earlier in 2014, Yogi had tried to kill Sethi and there were cases pending against him,” informed Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) of Sheragada police station. Meanwhile a case has been registered and investigating is on to nab the culprits, said the senior official.
