Berhampur: Three miscreants on Sunday allegedly looted gold ornaments weighing around 70 grams from a woman near Khaspa Sahi under Bada Bazaar police limits in Ganjam district.

According to  reports, the victim Parbati Behera of Gauda Sahi was on her way to a nearby temple when the three miscreants, posing as policemen, said her that a patrolling was going on near the police check post ahead and she would have to pay fine for wearing gold. They somehow managed to convince the old lady, who later removed the gold ornaments and gave it to them.

"They impersonated themselves as police personnel and told me to remove the gold ornaments as a patrolling is going on and if I am found wearing the ornaments, the cops will impose a fine of Rs 500. I took off the ornaments; one of them wrapped it with a piece of paper and gave me to put inside my bag and they left the place. When I checked my bag at home, there were no ornaments inside the wrapped paper," alleged Parbati.

SDPO Berhampur Bishnu Prasad Pati clarified that police never ask for fine or else for wearing gold. "If anyone is involved in such act, detain him with the help of people and inform us," said Pati.

Surprisingly, such cases of cheating and loot have been reported from the region in the last couple of months, especially on Sundays. Meanwhile, police have assured that all the culprits will be nabbed soon.
