Berhampur: After targeting women and elderly persons, miscreants posing as police officials allegedly looted gold ornaments and cash from a man near Venkateswar temple under Badabazaar Police limits in Berhampur today.

The matter came to light after the victim, identified as H Apalla Raju of Pakalabari Sahi, lodged a complaint in this regard.

According to sources, Raju was going to a temple in the morning when two bike-borne youths approached him. After identifying themselves as cops, the youths advised Raju to remain alert by informing how a woman was recently stabbed and robbed her of gold jewelleries in the area.

Later, the youths asked Raju to wrap all of his belongings including cash in a handkerchief. The fraudsters clandestinely exchanged the handkerchief with an empty one and fled the spot.

On realising that it was some trick of the miscreants, Raju then lodged a police complaint in this regard.

“After taking all the gold items including a chain, locket and three rings and Rs 2,000, the youths placed them in a handkerchief. I could not sense how they handed me me an empty handkerchief as everything happened very quickly,” said Raju.

On getting complaint, cops swung into action and intensified checking at different locations to nab the robbers.

“Efforts are on to nab the miscreants. A few days back, we busted a notorious gang and arrested one of its members while others are still absconding,” said ASP Prabhat Routray.

It can be mentioned here that this is for the sixth time that miscreants posing as police officials have robbed valuables from people in different parts of Berhampur.
