Bhubaneswar:  Are you looking for your perfect soulmate on matrimonial websites? Think twice before trusting someone by only seeing their profiles as you might get cheated.

In one such incident, Commissionerate Police arrested a youth on the charges of attempting to marry a girl by posting a profile of a doctor at AIIMS, New Delhi on a matrimonial site. The accused has been identified as Biranchi Narayan Das.

Das, who is already married and a father of two kids, on regular intervals was trying to contact the family of a professor from Balasore district who were searching for a groom for their daughter.

After the professor’s family learnt that no such doctor in the name as mentioned by the accused worked at New Delhi AIIMS, they decided to reject the marriage proposal.

However, the accused continued to pester the professor’s family by approaching them by creating another profile on the matrimonial site. This time the youth had tried to impress by posing as an IAS officer and changing his name.

"After posing as doctor, the accused had identified himself as an IRS officer with an intention to dupe a girl. Basing on a complaint, a case was registered and subsequently the accused was nabbed," said Bhubaneswar DCP, Anup Sahoo.

The youth’s attempts were foiled after the professor’s family recognised the youth and decided to teach him a lesson. As per a plan, the family asked the youth to come to discuss the marriage proposal at a hotel in Bhubaneswar. Later, the accused was caught by a team of Nayapalli Police who were earlier alerted in connection with the fraud.

“When we learnt that the youth had created fake Ids, we sought police help and he was arrested,” said Bijay Kumar Mohapatra, a relative of the complainant.

Social activist Namrata Chadha said,"If any person share wrong information, the concerned matrimonial  websites are also equally responsible."
